Rest. What does it mean to “enter into His rest?” Paul uses this phrase several times in his
letter to the Hebrews. He says the gospel was preached unto them the same as it
was to us, but it did not profit them because it was not received in faith by those
that heard it. “For we which have believed do enter into rest.” (Hebrews 4:3)
We think of rest as relaxing, but I think in this context it
means having peace, and comfort. The Holy Spirit is called the Comforter. (John
14: 16 – 18) If you are in the right place mentally and spiritually the Spirit
will comfort you. We can then be taught
Spiritual things that the world cannot understand.
The radio station I chanced to listen to recently, featured a guest who has
formed an organization supposedly for women to change the teachings of the
church. One of her complaints was that they, the leaders and members of the
church, treat her nice, but refuse to look at her lengthy documents and allegations.
My first observation is that she has the spirit of contention. It is not that
we shouldn’t stand up for what is right, for certainly we are called upon to do
so daily. But there is no reason for the leaders or members to argue with her,
for they have entered into his rest and she having been taught the same has not
received it and entered into His rest. She will not hear nor understand them.
“For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased
from his own works, as God did from his (on the seventh day) Let us labor therefore
into that rest… For the word of God is quick and powerful, and sharper than any
two –edged sword… and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. “
