Paul wrote to the Ephesians that they should “Walk worthy of
the vocation wherewith ye are called.” Definitely
he meant that if you have taken upon you the name of Christ and have been
therefore called to come unto Christ. If you have been baptized or in other
words made a commitment or a covenant that ye are a follower of Christ then you
need to live a life that shows it. It is one thing to believe Jesus is the
Christ, the Son of God, the atoning one, and that he died on the cross for you personally,
but:
1. Do
people know by looking at you that you are a follower of Christ? Are you dressed to please God or are you
dressed to please your peers? I do not suggest that you need to walk around in
long flowing robes, but that you dress modestly within the current fashions.
2. Do
people know by the way you talk that you are a follower of Christ? How’s your
language? Do you say unkind things about others? Do you harbor hate or guilt?
Are there things in your life you need to deal with?
3. Do
your actions show that you follow Christ? Do you say one thing, but behave in a manner
contrary to your words.
We all have broken these rules, but are we striving to
change. We do not change all at once. It is a process, and we most likely will
not be perfect in any of them until the end of our time.
For example, I am and have been adamantly opposed to anger,
and yet I have fallen victim to its negative effects too many times. God gave
us that emotion for a reason. We need to be able to recognize the difference
between right and wrong and to feel passionate about the difference. However, our
reaction to that emotion makes the difference.
God definitely did not intend for us to become violent over it. Yet
there are examples in the scriptures when he led his people in war or even when
he himself poured out his wrath upon his people. The lesson here is to seek his
will in all things and to follow it. Even as I say that I think of examples of
individuals who go on killing sprees and say God told them to do it. The rest
of us are pretty sure it wasn’t the God of the scriptures, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and
Jacob who told them to do these things. All I’m saying is walk worthy of who
you say you are.
