We believe in being honest, true, chaste, benevolent, virtuous, and in doing good to all men; in deed, we may say that we follow the admonition of Paul ... if there is anything virtuous, lovely, or of good report or praiseworthy, we seek after these things.

Why is it important to Paul how Timothy behaves?

Paul writing to Timothy said, “if I tarry long that thou mayest know  how thou oughtest to behave thyself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth. And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness; God was manifest in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen of angles, preached unto the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.”(1 Timothy 3:15 -16)
Somehow that scripture makes me think of my grandmother Stearns, who studied her scriptures daily and looked to them as a guide for her life. She contended that she always got a personal message from the scriptures. Someone was poking fun at her one day and said, “What if you come to a bunch of begets what would you do?” Without hesitation she answered, “Read them.”  It was because of her that when the missionaries came to my door I recognized and embraced the gospel of Jesus Christ in these latter days.
So I’ve taken some flak from some members of my family on the subject, but I don’t see any controversy here. Truth is truth and I discarded nothing of the Gospel in becoming a Latter Day Saint. I embrace every word from Genesis to Revelations. It simply makes more sense now. Suddenly the big picture is open to me and I understand why those begets are there. I understand why Paul wrote the above words to Timothy. Timothy had been called as a leader over a group of people and Paul as an Apostle was doing his duty to instruct him in how to behave in that position. There are many who take upon them the name of Christ, who live good lives and will be received into heaven as quickly as accept the authority of Christ, and of his Church. The church that he set up when he was on the earth, and which has been restored in these latter days. This is what we mean when we say we are the only true church. It doesn’t mean that we as a people are any better that any other group of people. It simply means the authority of Christ is here.
