When my twenty-eight year-old son died I visited with Aunt
Virginia in my grief. “What can I do for you?” she asked.
“Read to me from the scriptures. Chapter fourteen of John,”
I said.
Such comfort those words brought to me.
“Let not your heart be troubled. Ye believe in God, believe
also in me.” Believe that Christ is the son of the Father, the only begotten
son of the one true God. That he came to do His Father’s work. That He being the
Son of God broke the chains of death so that my son would live again.
“In my Father’s house are many mansions…I go to prepare a
place for you.”
He knew my son. He knows all of us. And Christ through his
atonement and resurrection made it possible for us to return to our heavenly
home.
“And whither I go ye know, and the way ye know.”
And Thomas doubted. Christ said unto him, I am the way, the
truth, and the life, no man cometh unto the Father but by me. If ye had known me (known that Christ was the
Son of God) ye should have known my
Father also, from henceforth ye know him, and hath seen him.”
I am paraphrasing here. Phillip said, Just show us the Father
and it will be enough. And Christ said, Have I been here with you this long
time and you do not know me? You know
me, you know the Father for the words I speak are not mine but the Father’s
words.
These words bring such peace to me even now twenty-five
years later. I love the words of Christ. I love the scriptures and the light
and peace it brings to me every day.
