In the fifth chapter of Romans Paul speaks of reconciliation
with God. Since God is three personages, the Father, the Son and the Holy Ghost.
We can be reconciled to our heavenly state through the atonement of the Son, (one
member of the Godhead) and by faith receiving the Holy Ghost we can return to
the Father who begat us spiritually (or created our spirits and caused them to
be united with physical bodies)
To reconcile means to re-unite. To harmonize, to make consistent,
restore, to make an adjustment of differences. Let us think for a moment what
that means. Like Jesus we were born into this mortal existence into a physical body.
The Son came down from heaven to show us the way. He was born, “he waxed strong
in spirit, filled with wisdom and the grace of God was with him. He increased in
wisdom and stature and in favor with God and man.” (Luke2:49 & 52) Everything he did lead toward heaven. We also
were born into a physical body and maybe we haven’t increased in wisdom and
stature in favor with God and man like Christ did but we had that opportunity.
Maybe the parent(s) we went to were thieves and murders so it was harder for us
to follow the path Christ showed us. Maybe we were born into a good and
righteous family and we said there has to be more to the world than this. So we
rebelled against our parents teachings and went our own way. It does not matter
where we are in the world. The Gospel - the truth is out there and if we find
it and hold to it we have the opportunity to be reconciled with God and ascend
into heaven. We get to reconciliation by way of our individual path. Paul says “For
we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may receive
the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether it be good
or bad.” 2 Corinthians 5:10) What have
you been doing in your body? I don’t
know about you, but I need to make some changes. I need daily to let go of my
troubles. I need to eat what’s right for my body, (I have food allergies) and exercise my body
and etc. We receive the things done in our bodies. Think about that. Are we carrying
around deep wounds physical or emotional? Do we punish our bodies? Do we need a
new body? Paul says, “Therefore if any
man be in Christ he is a new creature; Old things are passed away; behold all
things are become new. All things are of God who hath reconciled us to himself
by Jesus Christ and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation.” (2
Corinthians 5:17 – 18)
I try to live a good life and follow what I know is right. But
if Christ appeared before me right now I’d suddenly realize how far away from
being reconciled with him I truly am.
